Outstanding Voices at the 2022 Viotti competition

In October, the Gian Battista Viotti international Music Competition celebrated its 72nd edition with the discipline Opera Singing, which returned after four years of absence, due to the pandemic. 58 participants from 10 different countries travelled to Vercelli to take part. Tenor Jihoon Son (32, South Korea) won first prize while American baritone Emmett O’Hanlon, USA won third. No Second Prize was given.

Jihoon Son was born in 1990 in Seoul, South Korea and earned his bachelor’s degree from the Korea National University of Art. Later he moved to Munich, Germany to obtain a master’s degree from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Munich and Theater Akademie August Everding in opera singing. He currently studies with KS. Prof. Andreas Schmidt and has already received a number of important awards.

The “Giovan Battista Viotti” International Music Competition is one of the oldest musical contests dedicated to young artists. Established in 1950, this year it celebrates its 72th anniversary; it is the competition that boasts the largest number of editions in the world.
