New Zealand takes Center Stage
Spectacular Grand Final of the Michael Hill international Violin Competition in Auckland
Yeyeong Jenny Jin (20) took First Prize at Auckland´s Town Hall, performing an impressive Brahms Concerto with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of Andrew Litton.
The finale performance was shared globally via livestream on the MHIVC website and Facebook page; on The Violin Channel, Radio New Zealand Concert’s national broadcast and digital platforms, and across China through media partner Amadeus TV.
Over the course of the entire 8 days of competition activity more than 150,000 viewers tuned in to the livestreamed performances and social media activity across all channels reached over 1 million fans from around the world. Across the entire competition supporters from 65 countries tuned in to Aotearoa to watch.
Yeyeong Jenny Jin had previously won top prizes at the Stulberg International String and the Zhuhai International Violin Competitions. As the first prize winner, she receives a major cash prize alongside a recording opportunity with label Atoll, a winner’s tour in partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, a personalised development programme and a Michael Hill gold and diamond pendant.
In addition to this first prize place, Jenny was also named as the winner of the Chamber Music Prize, donated by Frances Bell and is the recipient of the Sheila Smith Prize, a three-year loan of an exquisite Domenico Montagnana violin, c1735 – 39, facilitated through the Rare Violins of New York Consortium.

Delayed for four years due to the continued COVID restrictions in New Zealand, the 2023 edition marks a spectacular comeback of the Michael Hill competition. It was held in two cities: starting out in Queenstown on New Zealand´s South Island, Semifinal and Final were held in Auckland.
