New York-based pianist takes First Prize at the Scottish Intl. Piano Competition

Following his win at the Maria Canals in Barcelona, Jonathan Mamora also took first place in Glasgow: Playing to a sold-out audience with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), Mamora triumphed with a scintillating performance of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto. He impressed the jury with visionary playing throughout the competition, including a performance of Rachmaninoff’s monumental Sonata No. 1. Second prize was shared between Yilei Hao and Yonggi Woo.

As well as taking home the title, Jonathan Mamora will also receive a cash prize of £15,000 and a concerto performance with the RSNO in their 2024/25 season. He also took home the prize for the category ‘Best Performance of the Compulsory Work’ with a selection of études by David Önaç.

The 2023 Scottish International Piano Competition was staged between 1-10 September with recital rounds at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the concerto final at RSNO’s New Auditorium. Founded in 1986 and held every three years, it’s one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world, and open to pianists of all nationalities, aged from 18 to 30.

“The 2023 Scottish International Piano Competition stood as a testament to the remarkable standard of musical talent from around the world,” said Edward Cohen, SIPC Coordinator.

“With 216 applications pouring in, we were truly moved by the extraordinary dedication and skill displayed by our contestants. It was heartening to witness the enthusiastic support of live music from audiences, especially as we emerged from the pandemic.

“Our competitors spoke warmly of the excellent facilities at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the kind hospitality offered by the people of Glasgow. We eagerly await Jonathan Mamora’s return for his season performance with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.”

Jonathan Mamora, who made his concerto debut at the age of thirteen, is celebrated for his exceptional pianism, lyrical style and virtuosic performances. He has performed at iconic venues including New York’s Carnegie Hall and upcoming engagements and recordings will include Yamaha, Steinway & Sons and Naxos labels.

Alongside his performing career, Jonathan Mamora excels as a collaborative pianist and graduate assistant at the Eastman School of Music, where he’s pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree under the guidance of Douglas Humpherys. His musical journey is rooted in studies at La Sierra University and The Juilliard School.
