A total of 12 prizes awarded in Munich
After a long hiatus due to Covid, the ARD International Music Competition was finally back, live, in Munich. Only the first round had taken place last year via online-video.
In existence since 1952, the ARD really consists of four international competitions, as it is held in four different disciplines. This year, this meant the instruments Flute, Trombone, String Quartet, and Piano- those disciplines that were cancelled in 2020.
The number of application remains high with a total of 670 instrumentalists and quartets from altogether 55 countries, out of which 330 were for piano. In the end, the competition invited 234 musicians from 40 countries to perform in Munich, with 86% of them from countries other than Germany- an impressive figure showing how attractive the competition is for competitors around the world.
While in many former editions, first prizes were not awarded, this year no one could complain about wasted opportunities. In total, four first, four second and four third prizes were given at the 2022 competition. Oswald Beaujean and Meret Forster, the two artistic directors of the ARD Music Competition, said: "We are truly delighted that we have been able to hold all rounds of this competition live, welcoming so many young musicians to Munich in person. Once again the level of the candidates was extraordinarily high."
