The big Picture: 2023 First Prize Winners at a glance
A review of the past year shows South Korea remains number one
A total of 58 WFIMC member competitions was held in 2023, with 79 First Prizes awarded. Including Second and Third Prizes, a total number of 218 prizes were given.
Not surprisingly, winners holding a South Korean passport account for 17% of all First Prizes, closely followed by China, Italy, Russia and the USA (each of them 9%). When looking at all Prizes (First, Second, Third), South Korea still remains at the top with 14%, followed closely by China (12%), Russia (8%), and Japan (7%).
The overall gender balance leans heavily towards male laureates: 143 candidates or 66% are male; 46 candidates or 21% are female, with 29/13% mixed prizes (i.e. in chamber ensembles) or undefined.
Looking at age, the range from 20-24 year-olds accounts for 42% of all prizes, followed by 34% of older candidates in the 25-29 bracket and 12% in the 30-34 group.
Disciplines were heavily dominated by piano competitions (20 competitions or 26%), followed by violin (9 competitions/12%) and voice (5 competitions/7%).
A comprehensive review and the complete data will be available at the upcoming General Assembly in Parma.
