Fondazione Gioventù Musicale d'Italia

Founded in Milan by Baroness Dorothy Lanny della Quara in 1952, it is the Italian branch of JM International (Jeunesses Musicales International), an international organization created in Brussels in 1945. This organization includes around 50 countries worldwide with the common goal of promoting music, especially among young people, regardless of culture, race, or language. JMI's activities are vast and range from classical music, which is its foundation, to jazz, folk, ethnic music, and the most recent musical expressions.

Gioventù Musicale operates nationwide through its branches and is among the major Italian musical organizations in terms of outreach and the number of initiatives realized (over 160 concerts every year). The primary aims of the Institution are to spread music and musical culture, especially among young people; to promote and support young musicians; and to cultivate the audience of both the present and the future.

In 2022, Gioventù Musicale d’Italia celebrated its 70th anniversary.

Throughout the decades, many renowned musicians have been part of the history and activities of Gioventù Musicale. Among them are Carlo Maria Giulini, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Sviatoslav Richter, Jörg Demus, Nicanor Zabaleta, Guido Cantelli, Arthur Rubinstein, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Ivry Gitlis, Severino Gazzelloni, Uto Ughi, Aldo Ciccolini, Teresa Berganza, Claudio Scimone with I Solisti Veneti, Roberto Hazon, and Riccardo Muti.

In more recent times, Alexander Romanovsky, Massimo Quarta, Emanuele Segre, Danilo Rossi, Enrico Dindo, the Quartetto di Cremona, Fabrizio Meloni, Maurizio Baglini, Silvia Chiesa, Alessandro Carbonare, and many others. Many of them started their careers at a very young age with Gioventù Musicale.

On June 28, 2005, the Gioventù Musicale d’Italia Association was transformed into a Foundation. This transformation marked not a change, but a strengthening of the cultural and social goals that are the foundation of the Institution. Thousands of young people have found in the concerts, reviews, festivals, and national and international auditions organized by Gioventù Musicale d’Italia an opportunity to become known to the public as well as to industry professionals, establishing connections with the most renowned names in international concert music.

Fondazione Gioventù Musicale d’Italia is supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture and is part of JM International, which is member of the International Music Council (IMC), an organization created by UNESCO in 1949. Gioventù Musicale is member of AIAM and an Associate Member of WFIMC.
