Leonid Surkov was born in the Russian capital Moscow. After the first seven years of his musical education, he studied at the Gnessin Music School with Prof. Denis Osver and moved to Berlin after successfully completing his A-levels. There he is currently studying at the University of the Arts UdK in the class of Prof. Washington Barella. In the course of his studies, Leonid became a sought-after soloist and chamber musician: he has won prizes at numerous competitions in Switzerland, Japan and Russia and was also awarded the Mayor of Moscow Prize. As a member of the wind quintet JuVentus, he is also a scholarship holder of the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now association. Solo engagements have taken him to orchestras such as the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Basel Philharmonic Orchestra, the CHAARTS and the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra. As a guest musician, Leonid has performed with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Russian State Academic Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Reflektor, CHAARTS, the Junge Norddeutsche Philharmonie and the Verbier Festival Orchestra (2022), where he played under the direction of Gianandrea Noseda, Klaus Mäkelä and Charles Dutoit. Masterclasses with Ingo Goritzki, Alexei Ogrintchouk (Academie musicale de Villecroze), Fabien Thouand and Jose Antonio Masmano round off his artistic profile.
He won the 1st prize in Oboe category at the ARD International Music Competition in 2024, 3rd prize at the International Oboe Competition of Japan in 2023.
